Globalizm, Terrorism, and Democracy

  Learning from Reflective Practitioners

In collaborative with the American Academy in Berlin, The Collaborative organized its second International Roundtable on “Globalization, Terror and Democracy: How 9/11 Changed the Debate in America and Abroad.” Thirty-two distinguished academic practitioners whose work focuses on the theory and practice of democracy, joined leaders from government, business, intentional agencies and civil society organizations to review September 11’s impact on the globalization of democracy and to discuss next steps in strengthening democracy worldwide.

  Learning from Reflective Practitioners

The Collaborative has just published a new report that describes a joint program now underway in partnership with The Advocacy Institute. This program brings together scholars of democratic theory and democratic activists so that they learn from one another and work on problem-solving together. The 28-page report on this project is available for free download in the PDF (Acrobat) format.

New Book:
"Making a Place for Community"

We highly recommend the new book by one of The Collaborative's principal initiators, Gar Alperovitz (co-authored by Thad Williamson and David Imbroscio). "Making a Place for Community, Local Democracy in a Global Era" explains, step-by-step, how to strengthen communities and restore democratic self-governance over economic life in the era of globalization.

This valuable book offers both an overview of the various forces now threatening community democratic practices in the United States, and a comprehensive examination of the available policy responses, at the local, state, national, and international levels.

The Chronicle of Higher Education recently published a survey by Jeffrey C. Isaac covering important new books on democracy and community building. His report features “Making a Place for Community” by Gar Alperovitz.

L.A. Times Review: "Democracy and its roots of grass," by Richard Flacks.
